Safari Park Executive Chef Joshua Mireles
Born in Upland, California, Joshua Mireles’ large family had many traditions around the kitchen table. He drew his inspiration from his grandfather, who worked as a chef in the Army and later transitioned his skills to a professional baker after he left the service.
Safari Park Executive Chef Joshua Mireles brings his passion, knowledge, and pursuit of perfection in the kitchen to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. He started his culinary career flipping burgers at the local McDonalds at age 16. A graduate of Orange Coast College and California Polytechnic University, Pomona, Joshua holds an associate degree in advanced culinary arts and a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management.
He learned the art of cooking for large groups as a banquet cook at the Hilton of San Bernardino. Joshua then cooked for those in the armed forces returning from their duties overseas at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Loma Linda, California. Furthering his culinary development, Joshua joined Casino Morongo Resort and Spa, working in its banquets and special events divisions. In August 2012, he moved to San Diego and accepted the chef position at the Safari Park. He strives to develop menu items that are locally produced and sustainable for the Safari Park’s many special events.
